Summary: "Not the worst product I've purchase, but not the best either"
I bought this Humidifier for my daughters room. She is 11 and has asthma since she was 4 months old. If we do not use the humidifier between allergies and asthma she has a difficult time. By all appearances this unit seems to work and perform just fine. The problem is that when you go to refill you will notice this horrible black flaky stuff floating in the bottom of the unit. It takes alot of time and wiping to clean the black stuff out of the unit and the water container. Not sure what that stuff is, but apparently mine is not the only one that does this, seems to be a common thing with this model.

Summary: "scary to use, UNSAFE!"
My Mom bought this at the local grocery store one desperate night when my very old one from the 70s quite working. Thank goodness it worked that night, and the following but the next cold my child got it was a scary machine. It sputtered water (HOT water) all over, about 3 feet. The night light would flicker as it surged with power to make steam. I finally used it in my room one night as I was very sick, and it made the house lights surge, and between the spewing water all over and the strange electrical crackling it made I tossed it in the trash right away.
Now in the market for a new I asked my neighbor what she has, she too has this model and hers behaves in a very similar way!

Summary: "Does the job - sound effects included"
Produces steam for ~$15. So it does the job but its not quite user-friendly.
First of all it needs some impurities in the water (salt) to work. If it doesn't work try adding a pinch or two of salt to the water (as mentioned in the user manual).
It does sputter and spit and growl - so might not be quite a perfect fit for a kids bedroom, with a green light!! (monsters!!)
And it sheds some metallic blackish material which I believe is the surface coating of the induction rods. So you will have to empty and clean it every now and then.

Summary: "Great tool to provide a good night's sleep!"
I love my Vicks vaporizer! I bought this when I was pregnant and I came down with a chest cold. Unable to really take much medication at the time (and OTC cough syrups do not really work that great...), I bought the Vicks vaporizer to see if it would relieve my coughing some so I could sleep at night. The price was cheap, I gave around $20 for mine and it was worth a try.
Now, for those who are complaining about the low amount of steam, make sure to play around with the amount of salt that goes into the water. It depends on the water in your area. I started out with no salt in mine, which did provide some steam but not a lot. I increased the salt 1 pinch at a time, and after 3 pinches of salt, the steam was flowing into the room at a nice rate. It does say that too much salt can ruin the vaporizer, which is why I started with 0 salt, and worked my way up.
Anyway, the vaporizer really did help a lot! With a few teaspoons of the VICKS vaporizer medicine in the water, it relieved my chest congestion a great deal and subdued my coughing so that I was finally able to sleep through the night. The nightlight on top does not bother me at all, it is a small green light and I don't even notice that it is on. I think it's a good idea so that nobody accidentally kicks & knocks over the vaporizer while getting up in the middle of the night.
I'm really glad I invested in mine and plan to use it a lot, even without the medicine in it, just purely as a vaporizer/humidifier. The cleanup is no big deal, I did notice the black flakes in the water but flushed them right out & vaporizer was good to go again.
Didn't notice any smell apart from the Vicks scent itself, and apart from an occasional bubbling sound, I don't notice much noise coming from the vaporizer either.
Great tool and a great option, the price is definitely fair & it's worth the investment. I'd definitely recommend this to friends & family!
